The English Speaking Union is an educational charity which sponsors scholarship and exchanges, arranges educational programmes promoting the effective use of English and a wide range of international and cultural events. Members contribute to our work across the world.

The ESU was founded in 1918 by the writer and journalist Sir Evelyn Wrench and during a long and distinguished history it has played an important part in fostering the cultural links between many nations. By developing an international network, with groups active in over forty countries, the ESU has been able to make an important contribution to global understanding and friendship. It is a non political, independent body, operating with the support of many distinguished public figures.

Central to the role of ESU today is the recognition that English language offers people of different races and cultures a shared means of communication. The ESU recognizes the role which English plays in the modern world and supports a range of activities to enhance its effective use in both education and daily life.

Dartmouth House in London is the international headquarters of the ESU, which is represented in 47 countries worldwide. The superb facilities of ESU Headquarters may be used by members for meals, a drink at the bar, to meet friends or business acquaintances or enjoy the cultural programme. Special rates for ESU members are available at certain London hotels; details are available from your Committee.
